European Union Allocates €2.3 Million to Combat Cholera Crisis in Africa’s West and Central Regions

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to address cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This financial support aims to assist Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials emphasized that the funds will be used for treatment, surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a surge in cholera cases throughout several African nations in 2026, notably with Nigeria experiencing a significant spike centered mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will benefit from €1.5 million, representing the largest portion of the emergency relief package. The allocated funds will expand the reach of intervention teams and supply cholera treatment kits along with other vital materials. Additionally, the support will enhance treatment facilities at public water points and household water systems. Part of the aid will be used by authorities to bolster disease surveillance efforts, especially in hard-to-access areas. The program also incorporates case management, risk communication, and community awareness activities as health teams strive to contain the spread within affected communities.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 countries in its African Region through June 28. This includes 1,528 deaths. Nigeria alone recorded 26,848 cases with 181 fatalities during this period. In June, Nigeria reported 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO highlighted that Borno State accounted for more than 95% of Nigeria’s reported cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected locations.

Funding allocated for treatment, water access, and enhanced surveillance

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 aimed at case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. This funding will also help strengthen disease surveillance, improve case detection, and promote community engagement efforts. It will support safe and respectful burials where necessary during the outbreak response. WHO data through June 28 shows 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The European Commission stated that this aid forms part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting these four nations.

Cameroon is set to receive €100,000 to bolster containment efforts and improve patient care in impacted communities. The support will fund additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO reported 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon as of June 28. Chad will benefit from €200,000 directed toward water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. This funding will also assist community surveillance and case management. Chad’s report includes 109 cases and three deaths during the same period.

Nigeria’s surge in cases propels regional increase in cholera infections

WHO reported that the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases in June, representing a 95% increase compared to May. The same month recorded 284 cholera-related fatalities. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Congo and South Sudan. The rise in Nigeria is largely attributed to the outbreak in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, population displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe infections can lead to rapid dehydration and require immediate treatment. The EU’s funding aims to support measures that break the chain of transmission and enhance access to healthcare in affected areas. The total aid package for these four countries amounts to €2.3 million. The focus areas include treatment infrastructure, disease surveillance, vaccination where applicable, safer water supplies, sanitation improvements, and direct community engagement during the ongoing outbreak response.
