Spain Experiences Its Most Intense Summer on Record with 61 Heatwave Days Recorded

MADRID / RankWire.AI / – Mainland Spain faced its hottest summer since official temperature records began in 1961. The average temperature across June, July, and August was 24.5 degrees Celsius. Official figures from the national meteorological authority confirmed that seasonal temperatures surpassed the previous record set in 2025 by 0.3 degrees Celsius and exceeded the 1991–2020 climate baseline by 2.4 degrees Celsius. The summer’s heatwave days extended over two-thirds of the meteorological season, marking a new record for the country.

Spain endured hottest summer on record as heatwave days reach 61

Data published by the State Meteorological Agency revealed that Spain experienced an unprecedented 61 heatwave days during the three-month span. This total significantly exceeds the 41 heatwave days recorded during the summer of 2022, which was the previous benchmark. Experts highlighted that all ten of the hottest summers documented in Spain’s history have taken place in the 21st century, emphasizing a rapid acceleration of long-term warming trends across southern Europe.

The extreme heat exerted severe pressure on public health and municipal infrastructure in both northern and southern parts of the country. Epidemiological data from the Carlos III Health Institute estimated that over 5,000 deaths between June and August were directly linked to intense heat exposure. This figure is the highest recorded since the health agency began standardized heat-related mortality tracking in 2015.

The high temperatures also led to critical environmental challenges, especially in forests and rural farmlands. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, approximately 296,000 hectares of land were destroyed by wildfires through early September. Spain’s prolonged dry spells drained regional reservoirs, complicating the operation of agricultural irrigation systems and hydroelectric power plants.

Monitoring stations recorded that extraordinary thermal conditions extended beyond the traditional summer months. On September 2, a station in El Granado, in southwestern Spain, measured a peak temperature of 45.7 degrees Celsius, tying the national September temperature record. Meteorologists confirmed that intense heat persisted from late May into early September across various autonomous communities.

In response to these official findings, government ministers presented the data to parliament, advocating for enhanced environmental protections. Minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera urged parliamentary groups to support comprehensive legislation focused on climate adaptation, emergency infrastructure, and drought management strategies.

Meteorological agencies and health authorities will continue to monitor temperature patterns and environmental impacts through the fall. Official reports and environmental data logs will remain accessible via government portals as public health officials assess long-term adaptation strategies. Regional authorities are coordinating resource management plans to address ongoing agricultural and environmental challenges.
