EU energy imports show oil value surge and mixed gas trends

LUXEMBOURG / RankWire.AI / – The value of European Union petroleum oil imports jumped 55.8% in the second quarter of 2026, while volumes changed little. Eurostat said import volume reached 36.7 million tonnes, up 1.2% from the monthly average recorded in 2025. The figures show a sharp rise in import value without a similar increase in physical oil deliveries. The data covers crude petroleum oils entering the EU from countries outside the bloc.

EU energy imports show oil value surge and mixed gas trends
EU oil import value surged in Q2 2026 while physical volumes remained broadly stable.

Liquefied natural gas followed a different pattern during the same quarter. EU LNG import value rose 4.1%, while import volume fell 5.6% from the 2025 monthly average. Imports of natural gas in gaseous form increased in both measures. Their value climbed 18.5%, while volume rose 3.4%. The results show that the three major energy import categories moved at different rates in value and physical quantity during the quarter.

The United States supplied 18.8% of EU petroleum oil imports in the second quarter, making it the largest source. Norway accounted for 14.3%, while Kazakhstan supplied 13.4%. Those three countries together represented 46.5% of the bloc’s petroleum oil imports during the period. The supplier rankings differed across natural gas categories, with the United States leading LNG shipments and Norway holding the largest share of gaseous natural gas imports.

United States leads EU LNG supply

The United States accounted for 63.2% of EU liquefied natural gas imports in the second quarter of 2026. Russia supplied 17.3%, while Algeria represented 8.1%. Together, the three suppliers accounted for 88.6% of LNG imports during the period. The concentration was higher than in petroleum oil, where the three largest suppliers held less than half of imports. The figures measure each partner’s share of EU imports for the respective energy product.

Norway supplied 51.2% of EU natural gas imports in gaseous form during the quarter. Algeria ranked second with 18.2%, followed by the United Kingdom at 11.1%. Russia accounted for 10.2%, placing it behind the United Kingdom in that category. Eurostat compiled the quarterly figures from Comext trade data and statistical estimates. The energy products covered include crude petroleum oils, liquefied natural gas and natural gas transported in gaseous form.

Q2 oil value rises after 2025 decline

The second-quarter increase followed a year in which EU petroleum oil imports fell in both value and volume. In 2025, petroleum oil import value declined 17.8% from 2024, while volume decreased 6.1%. Across all energy products, the EU imported €336.7 billion worth of energy in 2025, totaling 723.3 million tonnes. Total energy import value fell 11.1% that year, while overall volume declined by 0.6%. Those annual figures cover energy imports from outside the EU.

The longer comparison also shows lower EU energy import totals than the levels recorded in 2022. Energy imports were worth €693.4 billion in 2022, with volume reaching 849.6 million tonnes. By 2025, value had fallen 51.4% and volume had declined 14.9% from those levels. The second-quarter 2026 oil figures therefore mark a substantial increase in import value against the 2025 monthly benchmark, while physical volumes remained close to that reference level.
