Europe Aims for Record-Breaking Year in Wind Power Capacity Expansion by 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is projected to achieve a historic year for wind energy installations after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first half of 2026. This marks a 30% growth compared to the same period last year. The latest industry data from WindEurope reveals that these newly operational turbines generate enough electricity to power about 7 million European households. Additionally, they displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. High installation activity during the summer months is accelerating the continent’s energy transition, putting Europe on track for a record-breaking year in wind power capacity expansion.

Europe on track for record year in wind power installations
Commercial offshore wind turbines generate clean electricity across open ocean waters outdoors.

Germany led regional growth in the first half of 2026, adding 3.4 GW. This figure accounts for approximately 40% of all new wind power capacity across Europe. More than 500 individual turbines were brought online in Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Several other European nations, such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France, also experienced significant capacity increases. Remarkably, Ukraine added over 400 megawatts (MW) of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Belgium contributed an additional 60 MW to its grid.

WindEurope’s Autumn Report projects that by the end of 2026, total European wind capacity will reach 24 GW. This would set a new record for annual installations and serve as a critical milestone for the industry. The forecast suggests this growth phase will help reach a broader goal of 30 GW of yearly additions during the 2030s. Investment in new wind farms in Europe reached 9 billion euros in the first half of the year. During the same period, national governments awarded more than 17 GW through competitive auctions, with an additional 26 GW scheduled for tendering before the year concludes.

Germany Dominates Regional Growth with Over Three Gigawatts of New Wind Capacity

Despite these strong figures, industry representatives warn that ongoing structural issues still threaten long-term growth. While Germany approved permits for over 9 GW of onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, permitting activities declined in several key markets, including Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Although Europe is headed for a record year in wind installations, industry leaders emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines.

WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten stated in a public comment accompanying the report that 2026 could potentially set an all-time record for wind installations. However, she cautioned that this momentum cannot be assumed. Van der Straeten highlighted that decisions made by governments regarding permitting procedures, auction designs, grid infrastructure expansion, and industrial electrification in the coming months will determine whether the sector maintains its current growth pace.

Onshore Turbines Constitute the Majority of New Capacity Additions

To sustain current growth rates, the industry recommends five key policy areas for the European Union and individual nations. These focus on streamlining permitting processes and expanding transmission infrastructure across regions. The trade body also suggests channeling revenues from the Emissions Trading System into industrial electrification projects and setting a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, Europe’s total wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, fulfilling 27% of the EU’s total electricity demand.

European ministries and regulators will likely review these policy suggestions during upcoming ministerial meetings before winter. Official trade portals will continue to monitor turbine installation numbers and auction results to ensure alignment with EU decarbonization goals.
