Austria Experiences a Decade-Long Low in Asylum Applications for July 2026

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria saw only 244 initial asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly number in a decade. This represents a roughly 65% decrease from 697 applications in July 2025, as reported by Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including both first-time and subsequent applications, the total asylum filings for July reached 840. These latest figures indicate a significant drop in asylum requests across Austria during the first seven months of this year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received a total of 5,743 asylum applications, a decrease from 10,442 during the same period in 2025. This accounts for about a 45% decline compared to the previous year. The overall numbers encompass various types of applications, but the July figure of 244 pertains specifically to new first-time claims. The Austrian authorities release monthly asylum statistics that distinguish these categories, providing a clearer understanding of new submissions versus repeat filings.

In July, Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications, making them the largest nationality group for that month. The ministry indicated that most of these Syrian claims involved children born in Austria, rather than recently arrived applicants. Austria has also maintained restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases observed in returns and border apprehensions

Austria also reported higher departure numbers than first-time asylum applications in the first seven months of 2026. By the end of July, 8,856 people had left the country either voluntarily or through enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals, while 4,241 left voluntarily. The authorities also completed 392 transfers under the EU’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions along Austria’s eastern border in Burgenland have also decreased compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a sharp drop from nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. Austria’s Interior Ministry linked these border figures to enforcement efforts and cooperation with neighboring Hungary. Additionally, Austrian police have taken part in Operation Fox, a joint initiative targeting migrant smuggling and illegal border crossings.

2026 asylum figures continue their downward trend

The July data follows a pattern of declining asylum numbers in the first half of 2026. During this period, Austria received approximately 5,000 asylum applications, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented these figures as part of the government’s latest migration report. Austria has also maintained voluntary repatriation programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July, according to the authorities’ data.

The recent statistics demonstrate a clear year-on-year reduction in both initial first-time asylum applications and overall asylum filings. The 244 first-time claims in July represent the lowest point in a decade, as highlighted in the government’s figures, while the total for the month reached 840. From January to July, applications totaled 5,743, significantly below the 2025 figures. Austrian authorities include these monthly data as part of their ongoing asylum and migration monitoring, with detailed breakdowns for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
