Decrease of 37% in Irregular Border Crossings into the EU by July 2026, Data Shows

    August 17, 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources indicate a 37% reduction in irregular border crossings into the EU during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex recorded roughly 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external borders from January 1 to July 31. This figure is compared with the same period of 2025. Most significant migration routes experienced fewer crossings in this timeframe. The data serves as the most recent indicator of irregular entry activity across the EU’s external boundary.

The Eastern Mediterranean continued to be the most active route, with 20,232 detections. This marks a 28% decrease from 28,068 detections during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean route followed, with 16,454 detections, representing a 55% decline from 36,656. Together, these two routes made up about 60% of all detections recorded at the EU’s external borders. Libya remained the primary country of departure on the Central Mediterranean route throughout the seven months.

Meanwhile, the Western Mediterranean experienced an increase, with 11,217 detections, up 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, rising from 1,079. Conversely, the Western African route saw a 60% decline, with 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkan routes dropped 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border decreased 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean routes continue to dominate EU border detection figures

Separate data concerning Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom reveal another significant decline. Frontex documented 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, which is a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry totals. Additionally, the agency reported 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, marking a 9% increase. The seven-month data exclude exceptional incidents at Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its numbers on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency noted that future revisions remain possible as authorities update their information. These statistics represent detections, not individual people. A person may be counted multiple times if they cross at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is important when comparing route totals with the overall number of individuals involved, across the agency’s external-border dataset.

Seven-month data reinforces the downward trend from the first half of 2026

The current figures extend the decline observed after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex reported over 49,000 irregular border crossings—also a 37% decrease from the previous year. At that time, detections on the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in 2025. The latest seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase in detections on that route. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% decline through July.

According to the agency, approximately 3,800 Frontex officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders. They support national authorities with border management and operations, including efforts to save lives at sea. Frontex officers also assist member states with regulations under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The recent data indicates that route trends remain inconsistent, with significant declines across most major corridors and a rise on the Western Mediterranean route.
