European Union Extends Wildfire Support Efforts Across Multiple Countries During Severe 2026 Fire Season

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Union has activated a range of resources including aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and satellite imagery as wildfires challenge emergency services across Europe. Countries like Belgium and Spain requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as fires spread in multiple regions. These latest deployments introduce cross-border assets into national firefighting efforts amid the intense 2026 fire season. By the end of July, Europe’s burned area was approximately 2.5 times larger than typical for that time of year. This support was triggered by separate national requests, rather than a continent-wide emergency declaration.

EU expands wildfire response across Europe with support
European countries expand joint wildfire response as fires strain emergency services.

In Belgium, Sweden dispatched two rescEU firefighting planes to assist crews fighting the Hautes Fagnes wildfire. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, and Dutch aerial support was also part of the effort. EU officials confirmed that two Dutch helicopters were sent, while Walloon authorities listed one Dutch helicopter among active resources late Monday. The latest EU assessment indicated that over 3,000 hectares had already burned in the Belgian fire zone. Ground crews from roughly 20 emergency zones remained active on-site, providing additional support.

By Monday evening, Walloon authorities reported that nearly 500 personnel and more than 120 vehicles were involved in firefighting operations. Ground teams worked where terrain permitted, with farmers assisting in supplying water to combat the fires. The fire remained controlled in accessible sectors, although flames advanced overnight into areas unreachable on foot. Residents of Sourbrodt were able to return home on Monday night, but some in Küchelscheid remained displaced. To ensure safety, authorities maintained road closures and kept reservoirs closed to prevent interference with emergency operations.

International Crews Strengthen Firefighting Efforts in Spain

In Spain, France sent 104 ground firefighters along with 36 vehicles to bolster efforts in Aragón. The region had already seen nearly 16,000 hectares burned when the European support was mobilized. Aragón’s forestry authority elevated 14 fire danger zones to red alert for Aug. 18, compared to eight zones on Monday. The official bulletin reported very high or fully available dead fuels across central and northern areas. French teams joined Spanish firefighters already operating in the region.

Satellite technology is assisting emergency services in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service produces rapid maps, allowing authorities to evaluate burned areas and organize field operations effectively. These geospatial maps provide crucial information on affected terrains during active wildfire emergencies. The European Commission also manages cross-border aid offers and covers costs related to transport and operational deployment. Satellite data plays a vital role in response planning during such natural disasters.

European Union’s Multi-Zone Response Mobilizes Resources for Several Wildfire Hotspots

The EU civil protection system enables countries under pressure from wildfires to request assistance. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre handles incoming requests, matches them with available offers, and facilitates the deployment of crews and equipment. As of 2026, Europe’s joint firefighting fleet included 22 aircraft and five helicopters. Additionally, authorities prepositioned 777 firefighters from 14 countries in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. These resources form a reserve that participating nations can deploy during major emergencies.

In Belgium, the firefighting effort involves aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, drones, and logistical support coordinated through emergency operations. Meanwhile, in Spain, French reinforcements added personnel and vehicles to a large regional firefighting effort. Across Europe, satellite mapping continues to assist national agencies managing multiple wildfire situations. The Civil Protection Mechanism activates international support once nations submit requests through the European coordination system. Belgium and Spain have both utilized this process during the ongoing wave of European wildfires.
