Mass Evacuation of 1,800 Residents in Gey District Due to Wildfire in Western Germany

HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German authorities issued compulsory evacuation notices on Friday for around 1,800 residents in western Germany as a rapidly spreading wildfire moved toward homes. Official emergency statements confirmed that municipal civil defense teams ordered the immediate evacuation of the entire Gey district within the municipality of Hürtgenwald, in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Belgian border. The emergency response system was activated early in the morning after fire lines moved within 300 meters of the community boundary.

Municipal emergency response teams manage logistics during large scale civil defense evacuations.

The fire, initially sparked Thursday afternoon, burned across approximately 25 hectares of dense forest, about the size of 35 football fields. Elevated seasonal temperatures, dry winds, and parched vegetation hastened the fire’s growth, causing it to spread rapidly overnight to cover more than 300 hectares of woodland. Regional emergency management agencies issued the highest threat level via the national NINA emergency warning app, advising residents to gather essential documents and medications before leaving.

A main evacuation and aid center was set up at an elementary school in the nearby district of Straß to assist displaced families. Road closures across Hürtgenwald were maintained by regional transportation authorities to prioritize emergency vehicles and heavy machinery. Public safety officials confirmed that evacuations were conducted smoothly, with rescue teams conducting door-to-door checks to ensure all residents had evacuated.

The firefighting operation faced serious challenges due to unexploded World War II ammunition buried in the surrounding forest, remnants of historical military activities. Emergency crews reported hearing occasional explosions from hidden explosives as the fire approached an old munitions depot near Düren. To reduce risks to personnel and create firebreaks through the difficult terrain, military units deployed armored vehicles from the Bundeswehr to clear blocked access routes.

Aerial firefighting resources complemented the efforts of ground crews from regional fire services. Specialized helicopters equipped with heavy-capacity water buckets flew continuous missions, dropping water from local reservoirs on hot spots around the fire perimeter. Over 300 emergency responders from municipal, state, and civil protection agencies, with support from the Technisches Hilfswerk, established physical barriers to prevent the fire from advancing further toward residential areas.

Overnight Growth of the Fire to Three Hundred Hectares Continues to Escalate

Officials from the state government expressed concern about the fire’s proximity to vital infrastructure and nearby neighborhoods. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur highlighted the significant operational hurdles faced by local teams and confirmed that emergency funds from the state had been activated to support containment efforts. The regional leadership remains in close coordination with local authorities under the guidance of Bezirksregierung Köln to ensure continuous command at the scene.

Civil protection units continue to monitor the perimeter of Gey to protect residential properties and prevent rekindling as tactical operations persist. Environmental agencies are also tracking wind movements and humidity levels to evaluate risks to neighboring communities. As the wildfire forces the evacuation of 1,800 residents in western Germany, authorities assure that emergency services will stay fully operational until the ground conditions are stabilized entirely.
